Review of the Sex Museum in Amsterdam

Amsterdam is a place known to represent debauchery and hedonism. The sex museum could then be an opportunity for something truly exquisite, or just a tourist trap. Located near the central station and the red light district (which maybe says as much about the city as about the museum), there was naturall a concern it’d be the latter. However, I’d say overall walking through it and seeing the collection was a pleasant and informative experience, but with a notable fault, placing it in between these two categories.

There was a great variety of displays, with most being visual: video of classic black and white porrn, erotic art from around the world, and statues of gods sucking their own dicks. Some was genuinely good art, some was an interesting way of doing things, and some was rather amusing. There were chastity devices, toys, books, outfits, and other sorts of items. The variety and quality of the items was certainly a strong point of the museum.

The drawback was that it was unorganized. I would have appreciated an order of time period or theme across the different rooms, but there was none. Beyond constellations of similar items on walls, the museum lacked any cohesion in its presentation, and thus made it less informative than it could have been. This was despite the fact that there was a recommended order to traverse the rooms. But I was high and went the wrong way once and it didn’t give the museum any less sense.

The museum is not large though. An hour and a half is sufficient, and worth the visit.
